Overview
Midjourney is a generative artificial intelligence program and service created and hosted by the San Francisco-based independent research lab Midjourney, Inc. Midjourney generates images from natural language descriptions, called prompts, similar to OpenAI's DALL-E and Stability AI's Stable Diffusion. It is one of the technologies of the AI boom. The tool is in open beta as of August 2024, which it entered on July 12, 2022.The Midjourney team is led by David Holz, who co-founded Leap Motion.Holz told The Register in August 2022 that the company was already profitable. Users create artwork with Midjourney using Discord bot commands or the official website.
How does this AI Work?
- Users type a prompt describing the image they want
- A language model analyzes the prompt and converts it into a numerical code
- A diffusion model uses the numerical code to generate an image
- Midjourney uses Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to separate and recombine image content and style
- Midjourney can generate realistic images that are similar to photographs
- All images created are public domain unless created in Stealth Mode
- Users can create videos based on their initial image grid

- Standard Plan: Priced at $30 per month, or $24 per month when billed annually at $288 upfront. Offers 15 hours of Fast GPU Time, unlimited Relax GPU Time, extra GPU time for $4/hr, 3 concurrent jobs of either type, and a 10-job permutation limit. Includes Work Solo in Discord and access to Free GPU Time via rating images. Usage rights follow General Commercial Terms.
- Pro Plan: Priced at $60 per month, or $48 per month when billed annually at $576 upfront. Provides 30 hours of Fast GPU Time and unlimited Relax GPU Time. Users can run up to 12 Fast jobs or 3 Relax jobs simultaneously, access Stealth Mode, and run up to 40 permutations. Extra GPU time is $4/hr. All usage is covered by General Commercial Terms.
- Mega Plan: Priced at $120 per month, or $96 per month when billed annually at $1,152 upfront. Includes 60 hours of Fast GPU Time, unlimited Relax GPU Time, Stealth Mode, 12 Fast or 3 Relax concurrent jobs, and 40 permutation jobs. Additional GPU time is available at $4/hr. Comes with full usage rights under General Commercial Terms.
